Ledyard
Charter Academy will prepare students for their futures, both
academically and socially, in a rigorous academic program that
stresses the importance of community and allows students to
apply their learning in context. Ledyard will provide opportunities
for under-engaged students to re-focus on their strengths and
interests and will provide highly motivating and relevant learning
opportunities, much of which will be based in service learning
in the community, internships, and a strong academic core. The
Charter Academy takes its name from John Ledyard, a curious
and self-motivated Dartmouth College student who arrived at
Dartmouth College in the Spring of 1772. He spent four
summer months living (and learning) among the Iroquois as a
college ambassador and became dissatisfied by the constraining
academic offerings at Dartmouth upon his return to the college.
He built his own canoe and paddled the length of the Connecticut
River. He became an acclaimed world traveler, explorer,
and a lifelong hands-on learner.
The Equestrian Academy Charter School is designed to meet the needs of high school students with specific interests in both college academic preparation and also training in the equine industry. The founders will incorporate Orton-Gillingham instruction and develop children's phonemic processing skills as needed in order to do that. The school would have a maximum enrollment of 105 students, grades K-4, but will open with a smaller number of students and grow to this size. The curriculum will be comprised of a full elementary school program, and the emphasis will be on increasing the percentage of students who reach grade-level or above competency in reading, writing, and math. The program will use research-based programs and differentiate instruction, areas of specialty for the founders. The school will offer all academic subjects, including computer skills. Strong Foundations proposes an individual plan for every student to develop areas of weakness and strength. Systematic and sequential instruction is the primary instructional approach, with frequent skill development monitoring to assure progress.
