Vocational Rehabilitation Services to Schools and Youth
with Disabilities
Who is Vocational Rehabilitation? Vocational
Rehabilitation is a division of the Department of Education. There
are seven (7) regional offices in NH. VR assists individuals with
disabilities to gain or retain employment.
Definition of an eligible individual with a disability:
Any individual who has a physical, learning or mental impairment,
which for such individual, constitutes or results in a substantial
impediment to employment and the individual requires Vocational
Rehabilitation services to enter, engage in, or retain gainful
employment.
Accessing Vocational Rehabilitation:
Sample services and information provided to schools by
vocational rehabilitation:
Career guidance information;
Current employment related, trends and activities occurring in
the region;
Employer contacts;
Labor Law information;
Impact of disabling conditions on employment;
Connecting the student's work place activities with their academic
program;
Employer expectations of employees, etc.
Sample services
provided by vocational rehabilitation counselors directly to students
with disabilities:
Career guidance counseling;
Counseling on the impact of disability on employment in order
to develop tactics to circumvent limitations;
Job seeking skills development;
Job placement services (after the student’s school hours)
that support their academic program;
Job keeping skills development;
Advocacy for students with adult service agencies;
Information and referral to appropriate community services;
College planning;
Providing information regarding classes which will support career
pathway;
Consultant resources regarding Registered Youth Apprenticeship;
etc.

Sample services purchased by Vocational Rehabilitation
regardless of the students’ family income as determined
needed for successful employment:
Employment Preparation Assessment: Evaluation of job readiness
and skill development;
Individual Job Assessment: Job seeking skill evaluation and development;
Discrepancy Analysis: Evaluation of the job match, with an analysis
of the skills needed by the student to be successful in their
employment site;
Work Assessment: Evaluation of the job placement;
Transitional Employment Program: Job skill training on and off
the job site;
On-the-Job Training: Paying the employer to provide the technical
skill training to a student on the job;
Diagnostic
Services: Purchased evaluations to determine eligibility for services
and to assist the students in their career planning process (examples:
medical, psychological evaluations, adaptive equipment evaluations,
etc.).
Sample
services purchased by Vocational Rehabilitation that require student/family
financial needs testing:
Drivers Education;
Employment Related Adaptive Equipment;
Transportation (to meetings, job interviews, employment sites);
Clothes/Uniforms to meet employers dress code;
College Tuition, Room/Board and Fees;
Sample
services provided directly to the families of students by Vocational
Rehabilitation counselors:
Information and referral to community services;
Counseling on disability related issues;
Advocacy;
Information regarding: Vocational Rehabilitation and Adult Services.
