The Road to a New Hampshire Driver Education Certification


Successfully complete (grade of 75% or C):

  • Introduction to Traffic Safety
  • Methods of Teaching Driver Education - Classroom
  • Methods of Teaching Driver Education -In-Car

or their approved equivalents

After completing your courses contact the New Hampshire Department of Safety (271-2485). You will be required to pass two tests; a written test, scoring 90% or higher, and a one hour road test.

Submit the following materials to NH Department of Education, Office of Safety and Driver Education:

  • completed and signed original PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE application
  • copy of HS diploma or GED
  • proof of teacher certification (if applicable)
  • transcript indicating successful completion of required college courses
  • physical exam report (must have been completed within 90 days of date of app.)
  • criminal history record check
  • fingerprints
  • motor vehicle record
  • check for $25. 00 (Treasurer, State of NH)

After the Departments of Education and Safety approve the application you will receive a Provisional Certificate. A Provisional Certificate is valid for two years for supervised work in a secondary school (if you hold certification as a NH approved educator) or in a licensed commercial school (if you do not hold an educator certificate).

During the two years of holding a Provisional Certificate you must teach a minimum of 60 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 240 hours of behind the wheel. You must successfully complete the following for six college credits:

  • alcohol/drug information course
  • adolescent-development course
  • special education/special needs course, and
  • learning/teaching styles course

Three (3) months prior to the expiration date of the 2 year Provisional Certification submit the following to the NH Department of Education, Office of Safety and Driver Education to apply for Standard Certification:

  • completed and signed original STANDARD CERTIFICATE application
  • documentation Ietter(s) from owner/supervisor of completion of required hours of instruction
  • transcripts indicating successful completion of required
  • college courses
  • 3 year Professional Development Plan
  • Motor Vehicle record
  • physical exam report, signed by physician
  • fingerprints
  • criminal history check
  • Check for $40.00 (Treasurer, State of New Hampshire)

Once the Departments of Education and Safety approve the application you will receive a Standard Certificate valid for three years and may be renewed.
