What Does "Independent Living" Mean?

For many Americans with Disabilities, Independent Living Means freedom - the freedom to Make choices in their lives Taking an active part in daily Living at home and in the Community, which some people Take for granted, can be difficult For a person with a significant Disability.

Independent Living programs can Help overcome barriers; especially those that impede a person's Ability to pursue activities of his/her own choice.

A variety of services are available In New Hampshire to assist people with disabilities in Achieving their personal life choices and goals.

  • Independent Living Skills
  • Training Peer Support Counseling
  • Advocacy (assistance with resolving
  • Problems related to disabilities)
  • Home Modification
  • Accessible Transportation
  • Adaptive Aids and Equipment
  • Interpreters for Individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Service Coordination (Case Management)
  • Personal Care Attendants (PCAs)

Note: Eligibility for services from The Granite State Independent Living (GSIL) and the State Independent Living Program is Based on the existence of a significant disability that impedes independence. Some of the services available Are dependent upon financial need.

Sight Services for Independent Living

Independent Living Services are available for individuals who are legally blind or visually impaired and who are 55 years of age or older including:

  • Peer Counseling
  • Rehabilitation Teaching
  • Low vision Services
  • Orientation and Mobility
